Timed speaking practice

Practice PTE-style speaking tasks against a timer, with items we wrote ourselves, and get a fluency and accuracy score worked out on your own device. Works offline after the first load.

Practice only. This is an independent practice tool. It is not affiliated with Pearson, gives no band or official score, and does not predict a result in any test. The timings are our own practice defaults and can be changed. Items are original, not taken from any test.

Scoring is off

Timers work now. To get a score, download the speech model once (about 41 MB). It runs in this browser; your voice is not uploaded.

How the score works, and what it is not

For read aloud and repeat sentence we compare what the speech recogniser heard with the known text and add speaking rate, pauses and hesitations (repeats and filler words) into one 0 to 100 practice score. For describe image there is no known text, so you get a fluency estimate only: rate, pauses and hesitations, with no accuracy.

On a research set of short English sentences read by Mandarin-speaking adults, this kind of score tracked human expert ratings at a rank correlation of about 0.8 (our own test, 200 recordings, from the speechocean762 corpus, Zhang et al. 2021, openslr.org/101, licensed CC BY 4.0; we only used it to check our scoring, nothing from it is in this page). That is short sentences from one language background, not test-length answers, so treat the score as a rough guide to your own progress, not a grade. It can mishear accents and noisy rooms. It does not measure pronunciation as a human would, and it is not a band, not an official score, and not a prediction of one.

Repeat sentence uses your device's built-in voice to read the sentence aloud (some browsers may use an online voice; if you prefer, turn your network off after loading).
